I'm sure we all envision that perfect new kitchen - one filled with ample storage, top-of-the-line appliances, and stunning stone worktops. However, today, we’re focusing on practical steps to elevate your current kitchen into a happier, healthier space without a hefty price tag or a major renovation.

A wellness kitchen is an inspiring concept that many of us aspire to – myself included! However, it truly begins with our own perceptions of wellness. For me, creating a wellness focused kitchen means surrounding myself with beautiful items and sources of healthy cooking inspiration. It's about creating a functional space that’s filled with light and personality that enhances the atmosphere and promotes well-being. Let’s explore some simple, budget-friendly upgrades that can transform your kitchen into the wellness sanctuary you’ve always wanted!

Surround yourself with pretty things

Honestly, take a moment to peek into your cabinets and drawers. Are you excited by what you see, or is it filled with items that have lost their charm? Meanwhile, when you’re out and about, you can’t help but be drawn to the beautiful pots and pans or the stunning colours of napkins at the decor shop. That’s the feeling I’m talking about!

Maybe it’s time to invest in something new? When I bought a new set of plates, I felt a surge of excitement that inspired me to cook and serve a new variety of meals. Inspiration is more powerful than you might think! By curating a fresh collection of dishes, cutlery, linens, or cookware, you have a wonderful opportunity to introduce new colours and styles into your kitchen.

There are many wonderful spots on the French Riviera to find subtle, earthy decorations. If you’re not sure where to begin, feel free to reach out! I’d be delighted to guide you!

Every messy kitchen has a storage problem

Now, if you’re happy with what’s inside your cabinets but find your workspace cluttered and overwhelming, that’s a different matter. Sometimes we inherit a kitchen layout that doesn’t offer much flexibility - especially if you’re renting, or there simply isn’t space to expand, and you’re not in a position to invest in a new kitchen. So, what can you do?

In that case, I recommend embarking on an inspiring journey of decluttering down to the bare minimum. Once you’ve cleared the space, you can focus on redesigning your kitchen with smart solutions that ensure everything has its designated spot. This could include adding small holders for lids, installing extra shelves, hooks, and under cabinet organisers - all aimed at maximising storage.

And don’t forget, your walls can also be utilised for additional hanging containers or books.

Creating a small kitchen is all about multifunctionality, efficiency, and maximising every inch of storage. It’s a creative process, and I’d be happy to compile a list of clever tools and solutions for a future blog if you're interested!

Invest in wellness focused kitchen gadgets

When it comes to decluttering, take a moment to reflect on what you truly use and what you can let go of. A wellness kitchen is all about cooking with intention and prioritising health. Perhaps you’ve been wanting to adopt a new healthy ritual, like starting your mornings with a green smoothie or opting to steam instead of boil, but haven’t gotten around to it. This is your chance to choose the right gadgets and say goodbye to the old ones. After all, your health is worth the investment!

For those who have followed me for a while, you know I love a good kitchen appliance! It’s essential that these tools align with your cooking style and priorities. One of my top must-haves is a quality water filtration system. I’ve tried various filtering systems in the kitchens I’ve designed, but I’ve been particularly captivated by the "Kangen* water system. "Kangen" meaning "return to origin" in Japanese, mimics the natural properties of alkaline water found in pristine sources, making it a healing choice. Other essentials may include a smoothie maker, a juicer, cast iron cookware, a slow cooker, or a warming drawer. While some appliances may seem pricey, investing in quality means they will last and provide long-term benefits, so be sure to do your research.

To go further, consider looking into home dehydrators, sprouting machines, or a fridge designed to extend the freshness of your vegetables. There are many brands and designs to fit everyone’s needs, whether design - wise or budget - wise. I’ve had my stackable steam pot for over 15 years and use it every day. What’s your must-have gadget that you can’t live without?

Enhance your air quality with the power of paint and plants

Another wellness tip I have for you is to assess the air quality in your kitchen and home. We’ve all heard the concerning statistics about VOCs (volatile organic compounds) lurking in laminate furniture and synthetic fibres. The reality is that this issue is more widespread than we realise, and not everyone has the budget for Cradle-to-Cradle certified decor and furniture. My strategy is to tackle one problem at a time: upgrading a single element in your home is a significant step forward.

One of my favourite starting points is to use healthy paint. Repainting your kitchen may seem like a small change, but it can have a big impact. Not all paints are created equal, and I’d love using Graphenstone Paint. This unique, eco-friendly product combines the benefits of natural materials with advanced technology, allowing your home to become an actual breathing tree.

Another wonderful and cost effective solution is to bring plants indoors. Many houseplants can filter out harmful pollutants and toxins, making them an excellent addition to any home. If you’re a plant lover, you’re in luck! The possibilities for decorating with plants are endless: you could scatter architectural succulents throughout your space, create lush nests of tall leafy plants, install a vertical garden, or even start an indoor salad garden. Plants not only connect you to nature but also ground you and enhance your well-being.

Alternatively, think about investing in air quality monitors or setting up air purifiers to enhance your indoor environment even more.

Enhance your space with additional lighting

One crucial element of your wellness kitchen is lighting. Living on the French Riviera, we’re fortunate to have plenty of natural sunlight during the day. But when evening falls, do you have sufficient lighting for meal prep and cooking? Many people find that evening lighting is often overlooked, leading to a struggle in the kitchen. Take a moment to evaluate what your space might be missing;

For effective task lighting, think about installing rechargeable LED strips under your cabinets or switching to brighter light bulbs. If rewiring isn’t possible, decorative table lamps can be placed throughout the space to create layers of ambient light. There are countless styles available, and they can transform your kitchen beautifully!

For plant enthusiasts, LED grow lights are energy-efficient and can help your plants flourish while also enhancing the lighting in your kitchen. If you're looking to bring more natural light into darker rooms, explore Solros, a revolutionary system that channels sunlight indoors.

Lighting plays a crucial role in our health and circadian rhythm, influencing everything from our sleep patterns to our energy levels. Investing in quality lighting is certainly worthwhile, but even small changes can inspire and uplift your space.

Take a moment to reflect

I hope you feel inspired and eager to transform your kitchen! It’s all about cultivating awareness and exploring a little deeper. Close your eyes and visualise your kitchen space: what do you see, feel, and hear? Does it evoke joy, calmness, or perhaps frustration? Take note of those emotions. Consider what changes you’d like to make: the decor, the colour, appliances. As you breathe, set your intentions for your design journey. Express gratitude for your current space, acknowledging the beauty and comfort it brings. Take a moment for reflection.

I’d love to hear from you and see your before and after photos, so please keep in touch! Your journey inspires me!

Yours truly,

Jurgita
